When you see signs of pests in your home, you might just brush the signs as minor cleaning issues to address later. However, you don't want to dismiss some signs so easily because those signs can be caused by bedbugs.

The sooner you catch on to the presence of bedbugs in your home, the sooner you can get rid of them and enjoy your house again without having the heebie-jeebies every time you sit on a piece of furniture. Learn as much as possible about bedbugs so you can spot a problem and prevent this type of problem in the future.

Bedbugs Are Nomads

Some people think that bedbugs only appear in filthy homes and unkempt hotel rooms. However, the truth is that bedbugs are slick little nomads that can easily travel from place to place by hitching a ride in furniture, luggage, and even on clothing.

This means you may have brought bedbugs into your home in your luggage from the hotel you stayed at on vacation, or you may have moved the bedbugs in when you brought that sofa you bought at an estate sale right into the house. Maybe a visitor you had over brought the bedbugs with them on their clothing.

Bedbugs Bite

Some people confuse bedbugs with dust mites, which are other tiny pests who also like to spend their time in mattresses and furniture. However, the two kinds of bugs have many differences between, one difference being that dust mites don't bite, and bedbugs do.

You may not immediately recognize bedbug bites for what they are since the bite of a bedbug might look similar to the bite of a mosquito. Most people would much rather assume they are being bitten by mosquitoes than accept the fact that they have bedbugs without foolproof evidence.

If you continue to get bitten, especially when you haven't been outside at dusk when mosquitoes are most prevalent, then you want to do some investigating to rule out the presence of bedbugs in your home.

Bedbugs Leave Evidence

While bedbugs do leave proof of their existence behind, that proof is small and can be hard to find unless you know where to look. Check all the possible hiding spaces in the house and look specifically for little brown spots. These spots are their feces and proof they have been feasting on the blood of you or your family members.

Bedbugs Are Good at Hiding

Bedbugs are great at hiding and very small. Plus, they tend to come out at night, so you will likely find more evidence of them in the form of their feces than to find them. If you are determined to find them, have good lighting and a magnifying glass.

Check some of their other favorite places to hide. These places include box springs, behind baseboards, in wood furniture, in the cracks of upholstered furniture, in any cracks or crevices of walls and ceilings, in the folds of curtains, in luggage, under carpet or rugs, and in the seams of wallpaper.

Bedbugs Are Hard to Eradicate

If you find proof of bedbugs in your home, you'll want to act fast. Wash all possibly infested clothing and bedding. Dry the loads on high, this is what will kill any bedbugs that are still alive. Put the clean laundry in plastic bags and only put your clothing and bedding away after you know the bedbugs have been eradicated from the rest of your home.
