Now that winter is officially over, you need to turn your attention to the pests in your life. Once the warm weather arrives, ants and flies come out of the woodwork. Unfortunately, those aren't the only pests you need to worry about.

You also need to worry about the pests that pose health and safety risks for you and your family. In Central Indiana, quite a few warm-weather pests are a cause for concern. The best way to keep pests away is to invest in a sound pesticide treatment program. Here are five of the problem pests that a pest control service can protect you against.

1. Cockroaches

Cockroaches can be a real problem during the spring and summer. They often invade homes in search of easy access to food and water. For every single cockroach you find in your home, there could be hundreds – or even thousands – hiding in the walls and cupboards. Cockroaches aren't merely troublesome pests.

They're also a risk to your health. Unfortunately, cockroaches not only spread disease wherever they go, they also leave a trail of fecal matter and skin cells on every surface they touch. However, they also increase the severity of asthma and allergy symptoms.

2. Mosquitoes

Now that temperatures are on the rise, mosquitoes will come out in force. The wet winter that Indiana experienced this past year, has created the perfect environment for increased mosquito activity, which means you need to be proactive in your approach to pest control.

Mosquitoes are more than a minor annoyance. They also spread serious and potentially deadly diseases, such as yellow fever and malaria. Unfortunately, if you have standing water in your yard, or leaky faucets, you're at an increased risk for mosquito activity.

3. Termites

When you think of termites, damage to your home is probably the first thing that comes to your mind. It's true that termites can even destroy your home if the problem is allowed to get out of control. However, termites also pose potential health problems, especially if anyone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma.

Like cockroaches, termites leave a trail of fecal matter and skin cells wherever they travel. Once those particles make their way into the ducts, they can get spread throughout your home, which increases the risk of allergy and asthma symptoms.

4. Ticks

If you have dogs that spend time outside, ticks pose a serious threat to your health and safety. Even if you don't have dogs, ticks can still find their way into your home, especially if you have tall brush around your property, or you spend time hiking wooded trails.

Tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease, are particularly dangerous. About 30,000 people contract Lyme disease each year in the United States. Once ticks infest your home, they can be difficult to eradicate.

5. Fleas

Fleas are another pest that can invade your Central Indiana home during spring and summer. They're usually carried into your home by your pets. However, they can also crawl or jump into your home through open doors and windows.

Fleas carry a variety of diseases that can affect both you and your pets. Some of those diseases include murine typhus, tapeworms, and mycoplasma haemofelis, to name just a few. Diseases are more challenging to cure than they are to prevent.
